Hello and welcome back to on repeat.
on repeat
I must have listened to I’m Not Perfect (But I’m Trying) by Rachel Chinouriri upwards of 50 times in the past week. It truly has been, on repeat. The song seems to fit any situation, but my favourite places to listen to it have been strutting down the street and turned up loud in the car. This song was my entry into her music, and I’ve since been really enjoying Ribs, So My Darling and keep finding new gems. Rewind
Summer is my favourite season and it’s hard to believe we’ve passed the summer solstice already! This month I’ve been reaching out to producers as I begin to record my debut album. I’m exploring the sound, instrumentation and track order of the album and being in this creative mindset has lead to new lyrics and song ideas flowing. Pictures from left to right show me heading off to my first day recording the album at Migration Studios, me performing at Borough Market and a filming day recording some live versions of tracks from Flo Perlin’s new album!
Pause
This ‘Pause’ section is fast becoming my monthly therapy session - so much so that I actually avoided writing it this month until I’d finished the rest of the edition. But, getting my thoughts down on paper is proving to be a great way to understand them better, so I hope you find something useful in this section.
This month has been a long lesson in being present and accepting that things don’t always turn out the way you planned. Expectation vs Reality but in real life, not on Instagram. I am optimistic by nature, which can sometimes mean disappointment hits in a big way when reality presents itself. As someone who has historically brushed over big emotions, I’m learning to lean in - particularly into both emotional and physical discomfort. Learning that when you lean in, whatever ‘it’ is, becomes a little softer, holds a little less weight, and that worrying about the ‘thing’ is nearly always worse than the ‘thing’ itself.
Fast-forward
I have a few writing and recording sessions coming up this month which I am really excited about. Gigs wise I have a show at The Macbeth on Thursday 27th July and am singing at Borough Market again on Saturday 29th July. I also have a headline show in London on September 21st - venue to be announced. I’ll update my website asap with ticket info and I hope to see you at a gig soon!
I’ve been writing a list of dream venues to perform at as a solo artist - writing them into existence. Top two at the moment are Union Chapel and of course, Glastonbury!
Shuffle
I found these two podcast episodes of Nobody Panic about ‘How To Freeze Your Eggs’ really thought provoking - even if you’re not thinking of freezing your eggs, it’s a really interesting deep dive into a process we all know the premise of, but may not know what it actually entails.
Maisie Peters’, The Good Witch, album is here and it did not disappoint - listen here!
Thanks for reading team!
See you next month,
Imogen
